The 2017 season is officially over for the Akron Racers. The Racers finished 3rd in the regular season standings with a 26-24 record. They squared off against the 31-18 #2 seed Scrapyard Dawgs in the 1st round of the NPF playoffs.
Unfortunately for the Racers the Dawgs sent their $1 million ace pitcher to the mound in game 1. And it did not turn out well for the Racers. Abbott allowed only one baserunner on a walk through six innings. Abbott's no hit bid ended in the 7th inning when Racer right Fielder Shellie Robinson got hold of a pitch and knocked it out of the park. But by that time the Dawgs were already comfortably ahead 4-1 at that time. Abbott's final stat line was 7 innings pitched, 14 strike outs, one hit, one earned run, and one walk. It is pretty tough to win when the opposing pitcher is that lit.
In game 2 the Racers sent Cheridian Hawkins to the mound. Hawkins took a 3-0 lead into the 3rd inning but had a rough 3rd inning where she gave up 2 run homer and a horrible start to the 4th inning where she gave up 2 hits, hit a batter, and let in a 3rd run to tie the game 3-3. With their lead squandered the Dawgs once again sent Abbott to the mound who came in in relief in the 4th inning. Abbott threw 3.2 innings of perfect ball with no walks and no hits and 8 strike outs. Abbott recorded strikeouts on 8 of the 11 outs her team recorded after she entered the game. Her strike out tally is beyond belief!
The Racers pitcher Rachele Fico made the deciding play of the game when she walked Dawgs 3rd base Kasey Cooper with the bases loaded in the 5th inning.
So Abbot's perfection combined with an untimely walk sealed the fate of the Racers' 2017 season. But the Racers overall had a good year. They ended the season over .500 and made the playoffs. Hopefully next year the Racers can take the next step.
